Frequently Asked Questions...

Q: What is SOS Animal Rescue?

A: SOS Animal Rescue is a 501(c)3, non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the number of unwanted pets in the Midland area through placement and education. We are volunteers who share a common interest in pets. SOS Animal Rescue assists mostly cats and dogs at this time.

Q: What does SOS Animal Rescue do?

A: SOS Animal Rescue has three main areas of focus. The first area is education. We provide information and education to local pet owners and the public about animal related issues, including pet care, responsible pet ownership and the status of animal welfare in Midland County.
The second area is adoption and placement. We take animals from the local shelter when their time has run out and provide them temporary foster care until a permanent family can be found. The animals that come into foster care are given all veterinary care and the foster homes spend time with the animals to help identify what type of owner would be best suited for each pet.
Finally, SOS provide spay/neuter assistance for low income Midland county residence. Spaying and Neutering is the only long term soluntion to the pet overpopulation problem, so this program is incredibly important to realizing our goal of a happy, healthy home for every pet.

Q: Why should I adopt an animal from SOS Animal Rescue?

A: SOS Animal Rescue rescues most of its foster pets from local animal control facilities where they only have limited time and opportunity for adoption. Each animal is examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated and spay/neutered if old enough.  Our foster pets are quarantined for 2 weeks to minimize the chance of an adopter getting an unhealthy pet.  It also gives the volunteer a chance to evaluate the animal’s temperament so that it can be placed in an appropriate home.

Q: Can I find a home for my pet through SOS Animal Rescue?

A: If you have an animal you can not keep, you may call our voice mail at 989-689-6198 or contact us via e-mail at sosar@charter.net and leave a message describing your pet. A volunteer will respond to help you complete a referral form with information that will be used when prospective adopters contact us. In most cases you do not have the ability to take your pet into foster care, but where possible we will be to refer potential adopters to you.

Q: How can I get involved?

A: There are several ways you can support SOS Animal Rescue. We are always looking for for additional volunteers and members. We have meetings the second Monday of every month at 5:45 p.m. at the Grace A. Dow library in Midland, conference room A. Feel free to stop in and see what we are about. Also, check out our Volunteering page for other ways you can get involved.
